Angels On Horseback: Factoid

DID YOU KNOW...

The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) points to Liz Hartel of Denmark as one of the earliest benefactors of this special relationship between a person and a horse.

Although her mobility was limited from polio, Hartel won a silver medal in an equine event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Soon after that, equine centers began appearing in Europe and, later, North America. In 1969, NARHA was formed to provide opportunities for individuals who could benefit physically and/or emotionally from something as simple as riding a horse with a trained riding instructor.
